I have been reviewing Children’s books for only a brief time. This is the second book by Diane Stortz that I have reviewed, and both books, different as they are, provide excellent learning opportunity for little ones. It is never too early for children to engage in reading. And it’s never to early for us as parents to encourage our children to love books. “Say & Pray Devotions” is a board book with a soft matted cover. The illustrations are good and they grab the attention of toddlers. The cover, and each page of the book include an excellent illustration along with six or seven words that match a specific person, animal, or thing. The book provides opportunity for parents to begin teaching their babies and toddlers words while matching the word with the picture.
“Say and Pray” is divided into three sections, “God’s World, God’s Gift, and God’s Love.” “God’s World” includes pictures of creation, nature, family, household, and places (zoo, park). “God’s Gift” includes pictures of food, friends, pets, helpers (fire truck and fire men), grandparents, and music. “God’s Love” includes pictures of community, the Bible, a party, church building, meal time prayer, and bed time prayer. Each daily devotional includes a title (Good Morning! Fun with Friends! The Best Book!), a memory verse, and a brief prayer of gratitude. I love how the story of the page, the verse, and the prayer altogether create a theme.
This devotional is a great way to teach your toddler how to be thankful for all things, even the little things. Each page concludes with a thank you prayer (Thank you, God for friends! Amen, Thank you, God, for animals! Amen, Thank you God for the Bible!) Salvation (good news) and prayer is simply defined especially for the little ones. Our children are bombarded with competing television shows and movies, most of which will only develop roots of selfishness and unbiblical world-views. I am pleased that Diane Stortz has provided an excellent and entertaining book that will help our young children to think about love, community, friendship, family, salvation, prayer, and God!
