Jesus-Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. John 14:27
Jesus offers peace to His disciples and anyone who follows Him. To avoid confusion He definitively identifies a contrast with the assumed and artificial peace of the world. Most people prefer to live in peace and can relate to the desire for peace. Jesus offers a peace that exists despite chaos, in the midst of conflict and turmoil. For the disciples, conflict was coming. The peace Jesus spoke about is found in the Holy Spirit. We are the embodiment of God’s peace that others can witness as we calmly respond to tribulation.
In the context of John 14 Jesus explained preliminary and future events of God’s plan. He informed the disciples of His coming absence. We can look back with clear understanding, but for the disciples, Jesus’ teaching was difficult. Despite the turmoil in our nation, and despite the anxieties of this life, we can retire (or not) to solitude and experience peace in the presence of our triune God. We can experience this reality because we are the temple (dwelling place) of the Holy Spirit. He is always with us.
Prayer: Thank you God for your Spirit. You teach us, you keep us, and you provide peace. We are blessed by your comfort.
