Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. I John 3:16
John 3:16 remains one of the most popular verses of the Bible. I appreciate what the apostle John wrote in his epistle. Perhaps you will also recognize the value of I John 3:16. We can know and understand what love is because Jesus set the example. God set the example. God’s love led to action. Sacrifice. He gave His all.
John reminds us that we can know and recognize love based upon God’s sacrifice. We can experience His love as we experience forgiveness and hope. To practice God’s love we must also be willing to sacrifice ourselves for each other. This does not mean that we need to sacrifice our life, but it may. We should sacrifice our time, love, the need to be right, our own needs and desires for the sake of others. Not easy, at all, when we try to love in our own power. We must live in the reality that as we experience God’s love, we receive His love, His love fills us, and His love pours out of us.
Prayer: Thank you for demonstrating love. Help us to sacrifice our wants and selfish desires so that we can love as you love.
